Power O out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset is a gap-scheme run play that pulls the backside blocker (guard or fullback-type TE) through the play-side gap to lead the HB downhill, as shown by the red run path angling from the backfield through the point of attack. The offensive line down blocks to seal the play-side gap while the puller kicks out or leads through the hole, creating a numbers advantage at the line. With trips bunched to one side and the diagram showing no route options drawn, this is a pure run-heavy called play with the primary read being the pulling blocker's kick-out or lead block, so the ball carrier presses the hole and reads whether to bounce outside or stick inside based on the block.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth. If both backers are stacked tight to the line, they can beat the puller to the hole and blow up Power O before it develops. Watch the play-side defensive end. If he crashes down hard, the pulling blocker has a clean kick-out lane and the run hits for a solid gain. Identify if the defense is in a run-fit front like 4-3 Under or 46 Bear. These fronts clog the interior gaps and force the ball carrier to bounce outside into unblocked defenders. Post-snap, key the safety rotation. If a safety fills downhill quickly from depth, the play caps out short and you should audible to an RPO or perimeter play on the next snap. Man coverage on the trips side with no extra run support in the box is when this play hits hardest since all eleven defenders are occupied and the interior gap stays clean.
Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against your pass-heavy trips looks.
Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has six or more in the box, consider hot routing the trips receivers into quick outs or checking to a pass instead.
Use the pulling blocker as your primary read. Press the hole hard and let the puller's kick-out block dictate whether you bounce outside or stay inside.
Pair Power O with RPO Bubble Y Pop or RPO Read WR Screen from the same set so the defense has to respect both the trips side quick game and the interior run threat.
Against aggressive linebacker blitzes, this play punishes overpursuit since the pulling blocker can pick off a crashing backer, so use it as a changeup after showing RPO Duo Alert Glance a few times.
