Breakdown

Levels Switch out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset is a trips-side switch release pass concept designed to stress zone defenders with staggered crossing routes at different depths. The two outside trips receivers cross paths at the top of their stems, with one running a deep dig style route breaking hard toward the middle and the other settling underneath on a shallow cross, creating a natural levels read for the quarterback. The backside receiver runs a deep in cutting across the field as a window shot against single high shells, while the QB progression starts with the switch release routes on the trips side before working back to the backside dig. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by clearing out underneath zones and layering routes at conflicting depths for the flowing linebackers and safeties.

Defensive Reads

Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop signals Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone, which is exactly what this play is designed to punish with the levels crossers. Watch the safety rotation post-snap: if both safeties stay deep and split the field, the underneath switch release routes will have room to work against the flowing linebackers. Key the flat defender and curl to flat defender on the trips side, since a user controlled defender jumping the shallow crosser will open the deep dig behind him. Against man coverage, especially Cover 1 or Cover 0, this play loses its zone beater advantage and becomes vulnerable to a lurking safety sitting on the crossing routes, so avoid calling it into aggressive man blitz packages. If you see corners playing off with deep safety help over the top and linebackers sitting in short zones, this concept is nearly automatic since the levels stagger is designed to beat exactly that shell.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you expect zone coverage since the layered levels concept is built to exploit Cover 2 and Cover 3 flow. Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, expect Cover 2 and prioritize the underneath crosser since the deep dig will run into the safety help. If the defense shows single high, look immediately to the backside deep in route as your big play window against Cover 3. Hot route the flat or check the running back into a check release if you anticipate pressure from a nano blitz look, since the switch release routes take time to develop. Pair this play with RPO Glance Post or RPO Duo Alert Glance earlier in a series to get the defense biting on run fits, then come back to Levels Switch once linebackers start cheating downhill. Sequence this with Four Verticals or PA Zone Shot to keep single high safeties honest and open up the levels crossers underneath.
