Breakdown

Slot 2 Buc is a play-action flood concept out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset that overloads one side of the field with three distinct route levels. The backside X runs a corner route as a vertical shot down the sideline, while the trips side stacks a deep go, a curl breaking back to the quarterback, and an underneath out route that flattens toward the sideline. This is a Cover 3 beater built to stress a single deep defender with three horizontal levels, and the primary read progression works high to low: go route first for the deep shot, curl as the intermediate settle, then the flat out as the checkdown against a hard squeeze.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high safety alignment since Slot 2 Buc is a direct answer to Cover 3 and will stress the deep third defender across three levels. Watch the flat defender and curl-to-flat linebacker post-snap, since a fast trigger to the flat can jump the out route and blow up the checkdown before it develops. If the defense shows two deep safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4), the go route on the trips side will likely be capped, so expect the quarterback to work the curl or corner instead. Man coverage with press corners can disrupt the timing of the corner route, so look for a user-controlled defender jumping the sideline shot as a lurk threat. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge attack the play-action fake hard, so watch for contain defenders staying disciplined against the rollout action.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance to identify if the defense is showing a single high safety, since Slot 2 Buc is designed to punish that exact shell.

If the corner on the backside X plays soft outside leverage, take the shot on the corner route immediately off the play-action fake for an explosive gain.

On third and medium, lean on the curl route sitting down in the intermediate window as your safety valve if the deep shots are covered.

Pair this call with Y Corner and Four Verticals from the same set so the defense cannot sit on the flood concept without opening up seam and post shots elsewhere.

Hot route the underneath out into a quicker breaking route versus aggressive man coverage to give yourself a faster access throw before the pocket collapses.
