Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset sends all four eligible receivers vertical to stretch the field horizontally and vertically at once. The trips side shows the inside slot bending his vertical into a deep out/flag toward the sideline while the outside trips receiver and the backside single receiver both run straight seams up the numbers, and the TE releases up the middle on a skinny post-seam. The backfield stays in to protect, making this a true dropback man and zone beater with no play-action or RPO element shown, and the primary read progresses from the deep middle seam (TE) to the backside vertical, working outward based on the safety rotation.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment before the snap: two deep safeties evenly split signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, which stresses your seam defenders' ability to get depth quickly. A single high safety shading toward the trips side tips Cover 3 or Cover 1, opening the backside vertical for an explosive gain if your deep defender does not get a clean jam. Watch for user-controlled safeties baiting the TE seam route, since a smart defender will sit in the hole and jump the throw if the quarterback stares it down too long. Key linebacker depth at the snap: shallow linebackers who bail hard into seam drops are anticipating this exact concept, so a delayed sim blitz or zone blitz with five underneath defenders can take away all the seams and force a checkdown that does not exist here. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets torched by any of the four verticals, so if you see press man alignment across the board with no deep safety rotation, expect an explosive play if the quarterback identifies the matchup quickly.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shows two safeties deep or one, since this concept punishes single-high shells by overloading the seams. Against Cover 2, hold your eyes on the TE seam first since he splits the two safeties and creates a natural throwing lane before the safeties can close. Against Cover 3, work the backside single receiver's vertical since he only has one deep defender to beat and the trips side occupies the other two thirds defenders. Hot route the inside trips receiver into a deep dig or sit route if you see zone match coverage rolling to the trips side, turning a boundary vertical into an easy void throw. Pair this play with Slot Drive or Curls in your play-calling sequence to condition the defense to sit on shorter routes, then hit Four Verticals over the top once linebackers start creeping up on early down calls.
