Inside Zone out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset is a straightforward zone run play, shown here with the HB aligned offset in the backfield taking a direct handoff path behind the zone-blocking line. The diagram shows the offensive line executing double-team combo blocks at the point of attack with the RB reading the zone flow to find the natural crease. This is a pure run play designed to attack gaps based on defensive flow, not a man or zone pass beater, and the primary read progression starts with the playside double team, working from the frontside A gap to the backside cutback lane if the flow overcommits.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth since stacked fronts with linebackers crashing downhill will clog the playside gap immediately. Watch for safety rotation into the box from a two-high shell, as a safety sneaking down pre-snap signals run support and a likely early fill on the cutback lane. Post-snap, key the playside defensive tackle and linebacker reaction to the double team, if they get moved off the line the crease opens quickly for a north-south cut. User-controlled defenders sitting in the backside A or B gap waiting for the cutback are the biggest threat to this play, so patience on the read and a decisive one-cut are essential rather than dancing behind the line. This play struggles against aggressive gap-shooting fronts and cover 0 blitzes where extra defenders are sent downhill before the mesh point develops.
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your trips formation pass concepts. Check the defensive front pre-snap and if you see a heavy box with eight or more defenders, consider hot routing the Y or trips receiver into a quick screen instead of forcing the run. Use the offset HB alignment to your advantage since it changes the mesh point angle and can freeze linebackers for an extra half second, which matters against user-controlled defenders trying to fill gaps. Pair this with RPO Duo Alert Glance or RPO Bubble Y Pop from the same set so the defense has to respect both the inside run and the perimeter throw, forcing them to play honest instead of stacking the box. If you gash the defense with Inside Zone early, come back later with Outside Zone or Counter Trey to keep linebackers guessing on flow direction.
