Breakdown

PA Zone Shot from Shotgun Y Trips Offset uses play action to hold the second level before attacking downfield. The backside X runs a sit down and up double move to the post-corner area, the inside slot works a deep dig crossing back toward the formation, and the outside trips receiver on the play side (red route) pushes straight up the field on a go route as the vertical shot threat. This is a play-action zone beater designed to punish safeties who bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression starting on the deep go route for an explosive shot play, then working back to the dig if the vertical is capped, and using the sit-and-go route as a late checkdown against soft zone coverage.

Defensive Reads

Look for single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 pre-snap, since those are the most vulnerable to the vertical go route on the outside once the safety is forced to respect run action. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if the linebackers are stacked close to the box expecting run, the play action will hold them and open up the dig route crossing the middle. Post-snap, key the safety's eyes and hips, if he steps up on the run fake even for a half second the go route wins over the top. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties who stay home, since that coverage caps the vertical shot and forces you to check down to the sit route or dig. Identify user-controlled defenders dropping into a deep third or robbing the middle, since a smart user can sit on the dig route and undercut the throw if the quarterback stares it down too long.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium when the defense expects run, since the play action freezes linebackers and safeties. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties rotate down into the box after the snap that is your cue the defense bit on the play fake and the go route or dig should be open. Hot route the underneath sit route into a quicker breaking option if you are facing heavy pressure looks, since the play action drop takes extra time to develop. Pair this with Duo, Inside Zone, or HB Dive earlier in a drive to sell the run action and make the safeties more susceptible to the shot play later. Save this call for third and long or a red zone shot opportunity when you need one explosive gain, since the deep routes take time to develop.
