Duo out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset lines up with the RB offset next to the QB and a TE attached in-line, with three receivers bunched to the trips side. The blocking scheme is a double team power run concept: both guards and the center combo block the interior defensive linemen at the point of attack to create a vertical seam, while the TE and playside tackle wall off the edge to seal the run lane. This is strictly a run play with no route combos or pass options, and the primary read is a one cut decision for the HB, hitting the A or B gap hole based on which double team wins first and pressing the crease created by the double teams before bouncing outside if the linebackers flow too hard inside.
Watch for base 4-3 or 4-2-5 fronts with linebackers at normal depth, since Duo is designed to exploit exactly this look with its double team power scheme. If the defense shows a bear front or heavy interior alignment with extra defensive linemen shaded to the A and B gaps, expect the double teams to get overwhelmed and consider a different run concept. Key the mike linebacker's first step, if he flows hard downhill immediately at the snap without hesitation, the defense has likely diagnosed the run and you should look to bounce the HB outside the double team. Watch safety depth before the snap, since a single high safety usually signals man or Cover 3 support in the run fit, while two deep safeties can leave light boxes that favor this interior run. User controlled defenders spying the A gap or a linebacker sitting unusually tight to the line pre-snap are signs of a run blitz call designed to blow up Duo before the double teams can seal the crease.
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are showing base personnel to take advantage of the double team blocking before defenses can load the box.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if both mikes are stacked tight to the line expecting a quick hitter, consider audibling to Inside Zone or Outside Zone from this same set instead.
Use manual control on the HB to press the mesh point longer than the AI would, since Duo lives on a one cut and go decision rather than a designed gap.
Pair this play with RPO Duo Alert Glance in your play-calling sequence, since the run action looks identical presnap and forces linebackers to freeze against the play-action or RPO tag.
Avoid calling Duo into heavy blitz shows with extra defenders crashing the A gap, since the double teams need an extra beat to develop and can get blown up by fast interior pressure.
