Breakdown

Y Corner comes out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset with the isolated backside receiver running a slant and go release upfield, while the trips side has the tight end (Y) breaking out on a deep corner route and two underneath receivers running crossing routes to the opposite flat. The route design is built to stretch the field vertically on the boundary with the Y corner as the primary read, using the crossing routes underneath to clear out zone defenders and pull man defenders out of position. This is a man beater first, using the corner route to win one on one against a linebacker or safety in coverage while the shallow crossers create natural rub traffic against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth and alignment over the trips side since a rotated safety cheating toward the corner route signals two high or a bracket coming. Watch the linebacker responsible for the underneath crossers, if he sits and reads quarterback eyes instead of running with the crosser it usually means zone coverage and you should key the flat defender for the corner route window. Post snap, identify any user controlled defender lurking in the shallow crossing lanes since that user will jump the crosser and bait a throw, so stay patient and trust the corner route developing on time. This play struggles against a hard cover 2 shell with a corner sitting on the flat and the safety rolling over the top of the corner route, and it also gets exposed by a blitz that brings extra rushers off the backside edge before the corner route has time to break outside.

Usage Tips

Look to the Y corner route first since it is the built in first read against single high shells and man coverage. If the defense shows two high safeties pre snap, check the crossing routes underneath since the corner window will be tighter with a safety over the top. Use motion or a hot route on the backside receiver to turn his slant and go into a quick out if you see aggressive underneath zone drops jumping the crossers. This play pairs well with Slot 2 Buc and Four Verticals from the same set since both threaten the same vertical stretch and force linebackers to respect the deep middle before you come back to Y Corner later in a series. Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need a explosive gain and can afford the extra time it takes for the corner route to develop.
