Y Off Trips Close packs three receivers to one side in a condensed alignment while the tight end sits off the ball in the backfield next to the quarterback, giving you a Shotgun set that looks like heavy personnel but plays like spread. The tight split between the trips receivers is the whole point: routes cross faces immediately, defenders in man coverage have to navigate traffic before they ever get depth, and zone droppers get stacked on top of each other. Compared to standard Trips or Y Off Trips, the "Close" spacing turns every mesh, crosser, and switch concept into a natural rub, which is why plays like Wheel Mesh, Jets Crosses, and Pats Cross hit harder out of this set than they do from wider splits.
Read the numbers over the trips side pre-snap: three defenders over three receivers usually means zone, two defenders with a safety rotating means man, and that read tells you whether to hit the mesh concepts or the curl and dig concepts.
Motion the Y Off out and watch whether a defender travels with him. If a defender follows, run Wheel Mesh or Pats Drag Wheel and let the rubs work. If nobody moves, attack the vacated zone with Mtn Y PoCo or Whip Dig.
On third and medium, Mesh Y Out and Pats Y Out give you a clean high low on the trips side, and you can block hot route the Y Off if you are seeing double A gap mug to keep the pocket clean.
Keep the run game live: HB Power and 5 6 Trap out of this look punish nickel personnel, and HB Mid Draw is your answer when your opponent starts spamming heavy pressure and vacating the middle.
Pair WR Screen and Pats HB Screen with your deep shot plays. The condensed splits give you natural blockers on the trips side, and screens reset the down when your opponent is winning with pressure.
