Whip Dig is a trips-based passing concept out of Y Off Trips Close in Shotgun that pairs a dig route across the middle with a whip route underneath and a deep corner route from the backside iso receiver. The trips side runs a whip (the X receiver breaks in then snaps back out), a deep dig from the slot that sits across the field, and a wheel/corner combo from the inline TE releasing outside, while the backside single receiver runs a corner route to stretch the defense vertically. The RB stays in to chip protect before releasing on a check down, giving the QB a five man protection look with four routes attacking underneath and intermediate zones. Primary read progression starts with the dig sitting down against zone or breaking open against man, then works to the whip for a quick underneath option, and finally to the backside corner as the low percentage shot play if the middle is clogged.
Man coverage defenses struggle with the whip route because the receiver's stop and snap movement creates natural separation against trail technique, so watch for a defender biting on the initial break. Zone coverage, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4, is more likely to sit the dig down short of the sticks, so user a linebacker or spy the middle of the field to jump the route before the QB releases it. Watch linebacker depth and drop angles post-snap since a shallow zone drop can undercut the dig and turn it into a pick six opportunity. Against blitz packages, identify overload pressure to one side pre-snap since the five man protection with the RB releasing late is vulnerable to extra rushers off the edge. Single high safety alignments open up the backside corner route as a big play, so if you see two deep safeties rotate coverage to take away that shot and force the quarterback to work underneath.
Use this play on second and medium to second and long when you have room to let the dig develop across the field. Pre-snap, look for single high safety shells since the backside corner route becomes a legitimate shot play against Cover 3 or Cover 1 with no help over the top. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4, key on the dig sitting in the intermediate window between the linebackers and the safeties. Hot route the RB into a quick flat or swing if you diagnose a blitz, since the five man protection can get overloaded against six man pressure looks. Pair this with TE Whip or Slot Out in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath throws and the full field dig, then mix in HB Power or Inside Zone to hold linebackers honest and open passing lanes for the dig.
