HB Power is a gap scheme run out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Close that pulls the backside guard to lead through the playside A or B gap while the offensive line down blocks to seal interior defenders. The diagram shows the HB taking a slight jab step before pressing downhill behind the pulling guard, following the double team at the point of attack. This is a run play designed to create a numbers advantage at the point of attack, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the pulling guard's kick out or log block to determine whether to bounce outside or stick between the tackles.
Pre-snap, count the box, if the defense has stacked seven or eight defenders in the box against this personnel, expect the run and consider checking to a pass concept. Watch linebacker depth and alignment, if the Mike and Will are sitting tight to the line with no delay, they are likely scraping hard to fill the playside gap. Key the backside defensive end and outside linebacker, a fast crash from the backside can blow up the pulling guard before he reaches the point of attack. Man coverage on the perimeter with off corners tends to leave the box light, making this an ideal run beater since extra defenders are occupied outside. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with safeties reading run fast can shut this down if the strong safety triggers downhill immediately at the snap, so tempo and misdirection become key to keep him honest.
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since the trips closed alignment tends to pull a safety or linebacker out wide, creating a numbers edge for Power.
Use the pulling guard as your primary read, if he kicks out the force defender bounce it outside, if he logs the edge stay tight behind the double team.
Run this on early downs (first and 10 or second and medium) to stay ahead of the chains and set up play action shots later in the drive.
Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Mid Draw from the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits and prevent them from flowing hard to Power every snap.
Against overload fronts or heavy blitz looks, check into a quick game concept like Slot Out or X Curl since Power struggles when the backside is unblocked.
