Breakdown
Mtn HB Corner comes out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Close with the backside receiver motioning across the formation before the snap. On the trips side the outer receiver runs a deep corner route while the inner slot works a quick out breaking to the sideline, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a corner route into the flat area vacated behind the line. The backside single receiver runs a deep dig back across the field while the TE/slot defender crosses underneath, giving you a high low flood combo on the trips side paired with a crossing shot backside. This is primarily a man beater built off the motion and route spacing, with the primary read starting on the HB corner route in the flat, then working to the trips corner route deep and the backside dig if the defense rotates away from the motion.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defender aligned over the motion receiver, if he travels across the formation pre-snap that confirms man coverage and the offense should attack leverage. Key the safety over the trips side, if he rotates down to help on the corner route the underneath HB route will be wide open in the flat. Look for a linebacker or nickel defender carrying the crossing route underneath, a lurking defender sitting in that shallow zone can jump the backside dig and create a turnover. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can squeeze the trips corner route, so if you see two safeties splitting the field deep before the snap expect the corner throw to be contested. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge opposite the trips side can beat this play quickly since the protection is geared to hold up for a full route development, watch for late linebacker or safety walk up threats before the snap.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and can key on the HB corner route as your first hot read.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells by working the trips side flood, the corner route from the outside receiver should stretch the deep third defender while the HB corner sits underneath in the void.
Against man coverage look to the backside dig route immediately since it crosses the field and creates natural separation against trailing defenders.
Pair this play with HB Power or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so linebackers start cheating downhill, then come back to Mtn HB Corner to hit the HB route out of the backfield for an explosive gain.
Best used on second and medium or third and short to medium where defenses are more likely to show single high shells that this concept exploits.
