Play diagram for Scat from Shotgun Y Off Trips Close in Madden 27

Breakdown

Scat is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Close designed to attack both zone and man coverage with horizontal stretches on both sides of the formation. From the trips side, the outer receiver runs a deep corner/flag, the middle trips receiver crosses the field on a deep dig that settles as a crossing route, and the inside slot receiver runs a quick shallow drag across the formation. On the closed side, the TE runs a quick out/flat route while the outside WR runs a deep comeback (shown in red breaking back to the sideline). The primary read starts with the shallow drag crossing underneath, then works to the dig/crosser sitting behind the linebackers, with the corner route as the deep shot if the safety bites down on the crossers.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high safety, since Cover 3 and Cover 1 leave the deep corner route vulnerable to a one on one shot down the sideline. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or spying the drag route, as smart defenders will lurk underneath to jump the crossing routes and bait a turnover. If the defense shows man coverage press at the line on the trips side, expect the corner and dig routes to have natural leverage against off man technique due to the initial route breaks. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap: a linebacker who bites hard on the shallow drag opens up the dig route sitting behind him in the intermediate zone. Watch for a slot blitz or nickel blitz off the trips side, since the quick out and drag combo is designed to beat pressure by getting the ball out before the blitz arrives, but a well-timed blitz can disrupt the timing before routes develop.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium to second and long when you expect zone coverage, since the crossing routes and drag give you built in answers against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells.

Pre-snap, check the safety alignment: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, prioritize the drag and out route underneath before the zone can rotate and close throwing lanes.

Hot route the TE into a seam or vertical if you diagnose Cover 0 or man coverage with no safety help, since the TE out route becomes low value against tight man coverage.

Pair this play with Pats Cross or Jets Curl in your play-calling sequence so the defense sees similar crossing action but has to respect different depths, keeping linebackers and safeties guessing on drop depth.

Against aggressive man blitz teams, get the ball out fast on the shallow drag or TE out to beat pressure before it arrives, since the deep dig and corner routes take longer to develop.
