Wing Tight Z is a heavy shotgun set built on 13 personnel: one back, three tight ends, and a single wide receiver. That alignment is the whole point. Two tight ends sit attached to the line while a third works as a wing off the edge, and the lone Z receiver splits wide to the opposite side. Defenses read the personnel and check into base or heavier nickel looks, which means your Z is frequently isolated against a linebacker or a third safety with no help over the top. Compared to spread sets in Shotgun that force four and five defensive back looks, Wing Tight Z drags bodies into the box and lets you win the run game with numbers while keeping a genuine one on one on the backside.
Read the box before the snap on the RPO plays: if the count is even or in your favor, hand it off, and if the safety rotates down or the edge defender squeezes, pull it and throw the glance to the isolated Z.
Use this set on second and short and third and short in plus territory where defenses check into base personnel, then punish with Mtn PA Flood or PA Flanker Curl off your established run look.
Hot route the wing tight end to a corner or drag depending on the coverage read, giving you a high low with Mesh Spot's spot sitter against cover 3 and cover 4.
If you see man coverage across the board, run Mesh Spot and let the crossers pick off trailing defenders, then user the quarterback and scramble if the defense rushes five or more.
Against consistent interior pressure, motion the wing tight end into the backfield or block hot route your back to shore up the A gaps before going to Duo or Mtn Inside Zone.
