Mtn Inside Zone is a zone run play out of the Shotgun Wing Tight Z formation, featuring pre-snap motion across the backfield before the snap. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison to seal running lanes and create a wall for the ball carrier to read. This is a run play designed to attack gaps based on defensive flow, with the primary read being the frontside gap first and a cutback lane behind the zone blocking if the defense overpursues.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth before the snap. Linebackers sitting tight to the line signal a run blitz or gap plug that can blow this play up. Key the defensive tackles and ends for slanting stunts. Heavy line movement toward the play side can clog the primary read gap and force a cutback. This play struggles against stacked fronts with eight in the box, especially when the defense shows an aggressive run fit pre-snap. Zone coverage shells with safeties staying deep tend to leave light boxes, which is exactly when this run hits hardest. Watch for a user-controlled defender flowing down hard from a safety spot, since that is the biggest post-snap threat to shut down the cutback lane.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running man or zone coverage based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
Check the box count before the snap. If there are six or fewer defenders in the box, this is a green light run.
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest.
Pair this with RPO Glance Post or RPO Alert Glance in the same set so the defense has to respect both the run and the quick passing game off similar formation looks.
Mix in Mtn Power Wk after a few reps of Mtn Inside Zone to keep linebackers guessing between zone steps and gap power blocking.
