Duo out of Shotgun Wing Tight Z is a downhill gap-power run play built to double team the play-side defensive tackle before climbing to the second level. The diagram shows the offensive line covered up front with the fullback (or in-line blocker) attached and the HB aligned next to the QB, taking the handoff to attack a vertical crease between the tackles. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO look, so the primary read is the play-side double team: press it until a linebacker commits, then bounce off the double team into whichever gap that linebacker vacates.
Defensive Reads
Read the Mike linebacker's depth pre-snap. If he is stacked tight behind the double team gap, expect a quick fill and plan to bounce the run outside. Watch for a linebacker scrape exchange where one backer flows with the double team while another loops underneath to fill the cutback lane. Identify if the defense is playing a one-gap or two-gap front up front. Two-gap fronts with disciplined defensive tackles can eat the double team and clog the crease. Look for safety rotation into the box pre-snap. An eighth defender crashing down signals run blitz or a run-heavy alignment that can beat Duo before the double team ever forms. User your Mike linebacker and key the fullback or blocker's first step. Fast flow to the play side means the cutback lane is opening up behind the double team.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect double teams at the point of attack.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense shows six or more in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run or play-action shot instead of forcing Duo into a stacked front.
Use your fullback or in-line blocker's assignment to identify if the defense is running a linebacker scrape exchange, then user the HB to press the double team longer before cutting.
Pair Duo with Mtn Inside Zone and Mtn Power Wk in the same series so the defense cannot key linebacker fits off one blocking scheme, then hit them with RPO Glance Post once they start crashing down on run action.
Against aggressive fronts, motion is not shown here so rely on formation alignment alone. Snap it quickly on 2nd and short to punish light boxes before the defense can substitute in extra run defenders.
