Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are crashing downhill immediately it signals a run blitz that this zone scheme can gash if you cut back quickly. Identify whether the defense is in a light box (six or fewer defenders), which favors inside zone hitting the frontside gap for positive yardage. Look for a stacked front with eight in the box or an overload blitz package, which is a strong signal to abandon this run and check to a pass or screen. Post-snap, key the backside linebacker's pursuit angle, if he flows hard playside the cutback lane behind him opens up for a user-controlled HB read. Defenses that shift their front pre-snap to load one side often leave the backside gap thin, so watch the safety rotation to confirm where the extra defender is coming from.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and make sure you have enough blockers accounted for versus the defensive front before snapping it.
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz or stacked box, consider hot routing a receiver into a quick screen look or check to a play-action shot off this same formation instead.
