Wing Tight Nasty is the heaviest look in the Shotgun family, running 13 personnel with one back, three tight ends, and a single wide receiver. The alignment stacks a nasty split tight end just outside the tackle on the strong side, adds a wing tight end off the ball behind him, and keeps the third tight end attached to the opposite side, leaving one receiver isolated to the weak side. That gives you a compressed formation with true gap-scheme blocking angles while still operating out of Shotgun, so you keep the pre-snap read and audible flexibility that under center power sets do not offer.
The set differs from spread Shotgun looks because it forces the defense to answer run strength before it worries about coverage. Most opponents respond to 13 personnel by staying in base or bringing a safety down, which is exactly the leverage you want. The isolated X receiver on the weak side almost always draws a single high corner with no help inside, and the wing tight end works into the flat or seam with zero defenders assigned over the top. Inside Zone and HB Punch pull the front forward, and Read Option adds a legitimate quarterback keep threat off the unblocked edge defender, which is why the Power HB and 3DRB tags apply here.
Passing concepts lean on play action tempo and compressed route combos rather than field stretching. Bench and Bench Swap put a corner and flat combination on the boundary against the isolated side, which punishes squat corners and hard flat zones. Mesh Spot gives you a rub concept out of tight alignment where the crossers pick man defenders naturally because the split is so narrow. The Gadget tag means you have a trick element available, so opponents who over commit to the run box get burned by misdirection out of the same alignment they just saw on three straight power runs.
Establish HB Punch and Inside Zone early to force the safety down, then run Bench Swap play action off that same look to hit the corner route behind a committed defender.
Check the alignment of the defender over the wing tight end before the snap: if he is walked up in the box, hot route the wing to a seam or fade and throw over the vacated area.
Use this set in short yardage and in second and medium when the opponent is stuck in base personnel, since 13 personnel prevents them from getting nickel or dime defenders on the field.
On Read Option, watch the unblocked edge defender rather than the play art, and if he crashes inside keep it with the quarterback for easy yardage on the compressed side.
Save the Gadget play for a situation where you have already shown the same alignment multiple times in the drive, ideally on early down when the opponent is expecting another gap run.
Motion the isolated receiver across to identify man or zone, then decide between Mesh Spot against man and Bench against zone based on how the defender travels.
