Bench Swap out of Shotgun Wing Tight Nasty is a five man route concept with no play-action or run action shown, designed to attack both zone and man coverage with high-low stretches on each side. The backside runs a deep comeback/dig combo paired with a wheel route out of the backfield, while the frontside stacks a corner route from the wing over a flat/out combo, with a shallow drag crossing underneath from the opposite side. The primary read starts frontside with the flat-to-corner high-low, then works to the shallow drag as a checkdown, and finally to the backside comeback if the defense overcommits underneath.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage struggles against the frontside flat/corner combo since the flat route occupies underneath defenders while the corner route stretches vertically outside the numbers. Cover 3 with a single high safety is vulnerable to the backside comeback route settling in the void behind the underneath zone defenders. Watch for user-controlled linebackers sitting on the shallow drag, since that route crosses the field at a shallow depth and is a common lurk target. Zone blitzes with a nickel or slot corner dropping into the flat can disrupt the frontside high-low read, so key on presnap disguise from the slot defender. Two deep safety shells (Cover 2 or Cover 4) with tight man coverage underneath can take away both the corner route and the comeback, forcing the quarterback to rely on the drag as a checkdown.
Usage Tips
Use this on second or third and medium to long since the route depths take time to develop and need a clean pocket.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: two deep safeties favor the flat/corner high-low read, while a single high safety opens up the backside comeback against Cover 3.
Hot route the shallow drag into a quicker option against pressure looks, since it clears out fast and gives you a checkdown versus blitz.
Pair this with HB Punch or Inside Zone from the same set to keep defenses honest on early downs before dialing up Bench Swap once you see linebackers creeping into the box.
Use Mesh Spot as a companion call to give defenses a similar shallow crossing look but with different vertical stems, forcing linebackers to guess on route recognition.
