Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check corner alignment on the wheel route side: if the corner is playing outside leverage with no safety help over the top, the wheel is live for a big play. Watch linebacker depth at the snap because if they sink hard to cover the shallow crossers, the deep dig behind them becomes a much tighter window and you should look opposite. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flowing toward the crossing routes since the natural rub can still get picked off if a lurking linebacker or safety reads the quarterback's eyes and jumps the throwing lane. Against Cover 3, the deep dig has to work through the middle third defender, so if that defender sits flat-footed in the hole, expect a contested throw rather than a clean completion. If the defense shows a two high shell and rotates late into man coverage, the traffic from the crossing routes will disrupt trail technique and the dig should separate quickly.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties because this concept thrives against man coverage with the natural rub at the intermediate crossers. If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 with zone defenders sitting in the underneath windows, be ready to check down quickly to the shallow crosser instead of forcing the deep dig. Hot route the flat-crosser to a shorter option if you are facing a nano blitz look with fewer than five in coverage, since that route is your built-in answer to pressure. Use this play on second and medium to second and long situations where the defense is more likely to play zone match or man coverage rather than committing to the blitz. Pair this with Mesh Spot or Y Lead Read Opt earlier in a series to condition the defense to sit on shallow crossers, then hit them with the wheel route here for an explosive shot when they bite on the underneath stuff.
