Smash Drive out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset Wk lines up with a reduced trips look to the closed side. The outside receiver runs a deep corner route stretching the sideline vertically, while the two inside receivers run a stacked drive concept underneath, with the inner man running a shallow drive across the field and the second breaking off a short out to the flat at the numbers. This is a classic Smash concept built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells by stacking a deep corner over the shorter flat/drive routes, forcing the flat defender and deep half safety into a high low conflict. Primary progression starts with the corner route against the deep safety, then works down to the drive route sitting in the void, and finally the flat route as the checkdown against zone leverage.
Key the deep half safety on the smash side, if he jumps the corner route immediately the drive route underneath will be wide open. Watch the flat defender or overhang linebacker, if he sinks with the drive route the corner route has a soft window over the top. Against man coverage, this concept struggles unless the corner route wins deep, so look for a blitz or press man call from the defense to shut it down before the snap. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a deep third defender to that side, the corner route will be contested and the drive route becomes the primary answer. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the flat or lurking the drive route, since that is the main way defenses take away the easy underneath completion.
Use this on second and medium to third and short where a two high shell is likely so you can immediately attack the smash side.
Pre snap, identify whether the corner cornerback is playing hard outside leverage or bailing deep, since that tells you if the corner route or the underneath drive will be open first.
If you see Cover 2, hold the corner route as a hard read on the flat defender, then work down to the drive route sitting behind the underneath zone.
Against Cover 4, the drive route crossing the middle is your quickest answer since the safeties will stay deep and the corner will be capped.
Pair this play with Slant Stick or Four Verticals from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and vertical shots, since the formation look stays consistent.
Motion check the flat defender before the snap if you have a hot route available, and adjust the flat route depth if the defense shows an obvious blitz look.
