HB Power out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset Wk is a gap scheme run play that pulls a blocker across the formation to seal the point of attack while the offensive line blocks down. The diagram shows the HB aligned offset in the backfield taking a downhill path behind the pulling guard, hitting the hole between the tackle and the double tight end surface for a power run look. With no route concepts shown, this is a pure run play designed to overload one side with double tight ends and a wing back, and the primary read is the play side gap, pressing the hole and reading the pulling blocker's kick out before deciding to bounce or stick inside.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow expecting run blitz, be ready to bounce the play outside off the kick out block. Identify the strong side safety alignment, a safety cheating into the box signals a run blitz call and you should expect quick backside pursuit. Key the play side defensive end, if he crashes hard down inside the pulling guard will have a clean lane to kick him out and the hole opens wide. This play struggles against a heavy overload blitz to the play side gap or a user controlled linebacker shooting the exact gap the guard is pulling through, so have a check ready if you see that pre-snap. Look for man coverage shells with linebackers in run fits versus zone shells where the second level defenders sit and read, zone heavy fronts tend to flow slower and give the pulling blocker more time to connect.
Run this out of 12 personnel on early downs when you want to establish tempo and set up play-action shots later in the drive.
Check the defensive front pre-snap, if you see a 6 or 7 man box with linebackers stacked tight, this play still holds up because of the extra gap created by the double tight end surface.
Use manual controlled blocking with the pulling guard if you are getting quick backside penetration, kicking out the first threat past the tackle instead of climbing to the second level.
Pair this with RPO Power Peek from the same set so the defense has to respect both the read option look and the standard power run, forcing linebackers to freeze on their run fits.
Best called on 2nd or 3rd and short, or as a first down staple to keep defenses honest against the pass heavy tendencies in this formation.
