Breakdown
Posts is a dual post concept run from a two-receiver look on the left with an out and up combo on the right. The two receivers on the left cross their post routes off a natural rub, with one running a deep post and the other breaking off into an underneath post-angle route to occupy the middle linebacker or hook defender. On the right side the outside receiver runs a deep corner-breaking go route while the inner receiver runs a flat-to-corner route that stretches the boundary defender, giving this play both a two-man man beater crossing action and a high-low stretch to the field side. The primary read starts with the deep post to the boundary since the rub creates natural separation against man coverage, then progresses to the field side corner route if the safety rotates over the top.
Defensive Reads
Watch the cornerback technique on the left side pre-snap, if he is playing tight man with no safety help over the top, expect the post combo rub to spring the deep route open immediately. Key the deep safety rotation after the snap, if he flows hard toward the field side out and up combo, the boundary post is uncovered and should be your first throw. Identify zone drops from the linebackers, if the middle linebacker sinks deep into a hook zone quickly, that signals a Tampa 2 or match zone shell that can take away the shallow post-angle route. Look for user-controlled defenders sitting in the passing lanes on the left side, aggressive user lurk play can bait a throw into the crossing post routes, so double check the window before committing. Recognize blitz packages by counting box defenders, if the defense brings extra rushers and leaves only one deep safety, the field side corner route against a lone cornerback becomes the fastest answer before pressure arrives.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two deep safeties shaded to the field side, the boundary post combo is your best matchup since it only has to beat one deep defender.
Against man coverage, trust the rub at the top of the post stem on the left side, it naturally picks off the trailing defender and creates a window for the deep post throw.
If the defense shows single high safety, prioritize the field side out and up combo since the deep half is more vulnerable to the corner route beating a cornerback playing outside leverage.
Use hot routes to convert the short post-angle route into a spot or drag if you diagnose a heavy zone shell, this gives you a checkdown option against Tampa 2 or pattern match coverages.
Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or Slant Stick earlier in a series to condition the defense to jump underneath routes, then hit Posts to attack over the top once linebackers start sitting shallow.
