Four Verticals out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset Wk sends all four eligible receivers vertical, with the two outside receivers releasing up the numbers and the two inside slot/TE alignments splitting the seams, stacking four defenders deep from sideline to sideline. The lone running back stays in on a check release up the middle as a safety valve if the coverage collapses on the verts, while the offensive line holds max protect to give the quarterback time to let routes develop downfield. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to stress deep zone defenders with numbers, and the primary read progresses from the seam routes to the outside verts, working from the middle of the field out based on which safety or corner shows the biggest void.
Pre-snap, count the number of deep safeties and note corner depth at the line, since press corners with no safety help over the top are the biggest indicator this play will win against man coverage. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, because if he sinks deep to help on the seams that opens up the running back's check release right behind him. Watch for user-controlled safeties sitting in a lurk position over the seam routes, as a smart human defender will rob the inside verts and force you to work the outside numbers routes instead. Against Cover 3, target the deep third defender who has to cover the most ground, usually the safety rotating from the middle, since he cannot get enough width to defend both seams and the outside vert. Blitz-heavy defenses that show Cover 0 or man pressure with no deep help will get exposed instantly if the corners cannot stay on top of the outside verts, but a well-timed nano blitz that collapses the pocket before routes develop will kill this play regardless of coverage.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high safety, since Four Verticals punishes Cover 2 corners who have to fight through the seam route without help and torches Cover 3 when the middle linebacker cannot get enough width on the deep third.
Use your hot routes to convert one of the inside verts into a seam sit or a delayed drag if you see heavy safety help over the top, giving yourself a quick underneath answer against two high shells.
This play hits hardest on second and long or third and long when the defense is more likely to sit back in a deep zone shell rather than bring pressure, so avoid calling it into obvious run downs unless you are setting up a play-action shot later.
Pair this with Four Verticals KO or PA Verts Comeback from the same set to keep the defense guessing between the full vertical stretch and a comeback breakoff once safeties start jumping the seams.
Check the running back release before dropping back, since sending him up the middle as a check release adds a fifth vertical option if the linebackers bail into deep zone drops and leave the middle of the field wide open.
