PA Dagger from Wing Flex Offset Wk (Shotgun, 12 personnel) uses a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before attacking the seam and deep middle. The outside receiver on the left runs a deep dig that sits behind the shallow zone, while the inside receiver runs a vertical seam straight through the intermediate zone to clear space for the dig. On the right, another receiver pushes vertical up the numbers as a deep clear-out route, and the flex tight end runs a shallow drag underneath from right to left to give a checkdown and hold the flowing linebackers. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built off the vertical seam-and-dig dagger combo, with the primary read progression starting on the seam route to see if it splits the underneath and deep zones, then working to the deep dig as the true dagger read, and finally checking down to the drag if the pocket collapses or the deep routes are blanketed.
Pre-snap, identify safety depth and spacing first, since a two-high shell with safeties sitting shallow signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 where the dig and seam combo will have room to work between the levels. Watch the flex tight end and running back for blitz indicators, because if the defense shows extra pressure off the edge, the play-action fake buys less time and you need to get to the drag route quickly. Post-snap, track the middle linebacker's drop, since if he sinks with the seam route it opens the deep dig behind him, but if he sits flat underneath, the dig will need to be thrown with anticipation before the window closes. Beware user-controlled safeties who sit on the dig route path, as a rangy user safety camping the intermediate middle zone can jump the route and turn it into a pick six. This concept struggles against Cover 3 with a fast-flowing linebacker who can wall off the drag and a deep third safety who can carry the seam, so if you see three deep defenders post-snap, be ready to check down and take the drag underneath immediately.
Sell the play-action fake fully by letting the animation play out before you scan the field, since PA Dagger loses value if you rush the drop and defenders read run-pass conflict incorrectly. Look for two-high safety shells pre-snap because Cover 2 and Cover 3 defenses struggle to cover the seam-to-dig combo when the deep vertical on the right occupies the far safety. If the defense shows man coverage with a single high safety, hot route the drag into a deeper crossing route or speed up the seam runner's release to create more separation against man beaters. Use this on early downs in your play-calling sequence after running Inside Zone Split or HB Power to set up the play-action look, since defenses that bite on run tendencies get gashed by the dagger concept. Pair this call with Four Verticals or RPO Peek Slant in your sequence so opponents cannot key on formation tendencies out of Wing Flex Offset Wk.
