Breakdown

Seams Z-Under lines up out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset Wk with 12 personnel, showing two receivers stacked to the boundary, a vertical seam route from the inline TE, and a wide seam release from the outside receiver on that side, plus a shallow drag from the second boundary receiver crossing under everything. The RB releases up the middle on a checkrelease/scan route while the offensive line slides protection to handle any interior pressure. This is a man beater built around the two seam stems stretching the hash defenders vertically while the underneath drag and RB check give you a rhythm answer versus man coverage leverage or blitz, with the primary read starting on the seam to the open side before working down to the drag and RB check.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are sitting shallow expecting a run fit the seams will beat them over the top before rotation. Watch the flat defender or wing linebacker on the drag route side, if he sinks too deep the shallow drag becomes an easy chunk gain underneath. Key the middle linebacker's drop, a fast collapse into the seam lane signals zone coverage trying to wall off the vertical, which means the RB check or the far seam becomes the better answer. Look for a user lurk defender sitting in the seam window, since aggressive Madden players will often jump the seam route with a spy or rat defender if they anticipate this concept. This play struggles against a hard Cover 3 shell with a deep middle safety sitting directly in the seam lane, so if you see that shell pre-snap consider hot routing the seam into a different breaking route.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties cheating outside the numbers the seams have a soft window to work with. Use this against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells where the seam routes split the safety and corner, forcing a hard choice on who takes away the vertical. Against man coverage with no help over the top, take the first open seam immediately rather than waiting, since the window closes fast once the DB flips his hips. Hot route the RB into a quick flare if you diagnose a blitz look, giving yourself an outlet instead of holding the ball through the seam progression. Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or Four Verticals from the same set to keep the defense honest on seam and vertical shells, then come back to Seams Z-Under once the defense starts jumping the shallow routes.
