HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset Wk sends four vertical release routes upfield to clear out underneath defenders and pull linebackers deep, while the HB slips out to the backside behind a screen of releasing linemen. The offensive line shows a release pattern to get out in front of the throw, giving the back a wall of blockers as he works to the flat away from the strength of the formation. This is a classic screen pass designed to beat pressure and aggressive man coverage, with the primary read being an immediate check to the HB in the backfield as soon as the blockers get set up in space.
Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers who are quick to read screen and sit, since they can blow this play up before the blockers get set. Check linebacker depth at the snap, if they are shallow and squatting in short zones they can jump the screen lane and disrupt the timing. Man coverage with aggressive underneath defenders is the ideal shell for this concept since it pulls those defenders away from the backfield. Zone coverages that keep linebackers at home in shallow drops or spy the backfield are the biggest threat to this play, as they can read the HB's release immediately. Look for nano blitzes or contain rushers who stay disciplined on the edge, since they can string the play out and force the back back inside into traffic.
Call this play when you see pre-snap blitz indicators like linebackers creeping to the line or a defensive coordinator sending extra rushers, since the vertical releases will occupy those rushers and open the screen lane. Use the vertical routes as bait against man coverage teams that like to play press and chase, forcing defenders to run themselves out of the play. Get in the habit of throwing this quickly once the linemen release, do not hold the ball waiting for verticals to develop since the whole point is the quick outlet to the HB. Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Verts Comeback from the same set so the defense respects the deep shots and stays honest, making them second guess jumping the screen. Best used on early downs or after a big play to slow down an aggressive pass rush and reset the chains with a low risk, high reward call.
