Breakdown

PA Verts Comeback runs a play-action fake out of Shotgun Wing Flex Offset Wk with 12 personnel, holding the fake long enough to freeze linebackers before the quarterback works a four verticals shell. Both outside receivers stem vertical then break down into comeback routes at the top of the screen, the inline TE runs a red seam straight up the middle, and the remaining slot receiver releases underneath on a quick out to the flat as a checkdown or hot route beater. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read progression starting on the outside comeback against a hard-squatting corner, moving to the deep seam if the middle of the field is open, and checking down to the flat route if the coverage rotates hard and the underneath window closes.

Defensive Reads

Watch the corners at the snap: if they turn and run with the vertical stem instead of squatting, they are keying the comeback and you should abort to the seam or flat instead. Key the deep safeties pre-snap: two safeties splitting the field wide often signals Cover 2, which opens the comeback windows outside, while a single high safety signals Cover 3 and favors the seam route. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the deep middle third, since a lurking safety or linebacker in that throwing lane can jump the seam route and bait a pick six. If linebackers show blitz and vacate their zone drops immediately, expect man coverage behind it, which means the flat route and comeback become quick answers before pressure arrives. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or quarters shells where corners get vertical help, since the comeback throw becomes a low percentage window against safeties reading the QB's eyes.

Usage Tips

Sell the play-action fake fully before climbing the pocket so the corners commit to the vertical stem and give up the comeback break underneath them.

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safeties: if you see two safeties bail deep at the snap it is likely Cover 2, which is when the comeback routes are most dangerous against squatting corners.

Use the flat route as your built-in hot route answer versus blitz looks, since it clears out fast and gives you a quick throw against man pressure or Cover 0.

Pair this play with Four Verticals and Four Verticals KO in the same set so the defense cannot sit on the comeback break, forcing them to respect the deep shots every snap.

Best called on second and medium to second and long, or on any first down shot opportunity after you have shown the defense the flat and RPO game earlier in the drive.
