Defensive Reads
Look for light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box pre-snap, since this scheme thrives against nickel and dime fronts that sacrifice run defense for coverage. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they are sitting flat instead of flowing to the play side gap, the cutback lane backside will be there for the running back. Identify safety alignment before the snap, because a single high safety cheating late leaves the frontside gap wide open against zone blitzes that crash the edge. Beware of stacked fronts and aggressive A-gap blitzes, which can blow up the double team before the running back reads the hole. Post-snap, key on the play side defensive tackle: if he gets immediate penetration into the double team, expect the back to cut it backside rather than staying frontside.

Run this out of neutral downs like 2nd and short or 1st and 10 to keep defenses honest against pass heavy tendencies.
Check the defensive front pre-snap and audible to Inside Zone Split if you see an overloaded front stacked toward your intended run gap.
Use the two receivers on the backside as decoys by motioning one to check for man coverage, which tips off blitz packages before the snap.
