This is a run play at its core with no pass concept attached, so the entire design hinges on the QB correctly diagnosing whether the edge defender crashes down on the running back or stays home to contain the quarterback.
Watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker first, since a hard crash toward the running back should trigger an automatic QB pull and edge attack. If that same defender sits and stays disciplined in a contain shell, the correct read is the handoff to the running back into the lead blocker's lane. Check linebacker depth before the snap, since linebackers sitting shallow at four yards or less can beat the lead blocker to the point of attack and blow up the interior run. Look for a slot corner or nickel defender flying downhill immediately off the snap, which signals a run blitz look designed to erase the mesh point before the read develops. Man coverage on the perimeter with safeties rotated into the box is the shell this beats most consistently, while two high safety looks with disciplined edge players and quick linebacker fills shut this play down.
Pre-snap, check the defensive end or outside linebacker alignment on the play side edge since this is the exact defender the QB reads at the mesh point.
If the defense shows a heavy box with the defensive end crashing hard on run plays consistently, lean toward pulling the ball and attacking the pitch lane on the edge.
Use this play on early downs in the run game to set up RPO Alert Z Bang later in the drive, since defenders keying on the mesh point become vulnerable to the pass tag off similar action.
