HB Power out of Shotgun Wide Slot Left is a downhill gap scheme run that pulls the backside guard (and often a fullback or H-back kick out) to create a lead blocker through the playside A or B gap. The offensive line down blocks to seal the playside while the puller wraps to handle the first threat off the edge, giving the HB a strong point of attack with a cutback lane if the backside is overpursued. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read for the ball carrier is to press the puller's block, decide whether to hit downhill off his hip or bounce outside if the edge defender squeezes hard inside.
Watch the Mike linebacker's alignment before the snap: if he is stacked tight to the line, expect a quick fill that can be sealed by the pulling blocker. Man or user defenders who crash hard down the line to spy the pulling guard open up cutback lanes, so patience through the mesh point is key against aggressive fill defenses. Zone shells with a light box (nickel or dime with only two down linemen up front) are the ideal matchup since there are fewer bodies to climb to the second level. Stacked 4-3 or 46 fronts with extra linebackers near the line of scrimmage can blow up the pulling lane if the offense does not account for an extra hat, so check for run blitz indicators like linebackers creeping into the A gaps pre-snap. Post-snap, respect any user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill to fill the edge, since that is the classic sign of a hot linebacker keying the mesh point rather than reading their run fit assignment.
Check the box count before the snap and only run HB Power into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle to tackle area.
