PA Power Y Pop is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Wide Slot Left that sells the Power run action to the strong side before the QB pulls and works the pass concept. The Y (tight end) runs a pop pass route sitting in the middle void, giving the QB a quick answer against aggressive linebackers who bite on the play fake, while the outside receivers stretch the field vertically to hold the safeties. This is a zone beater at its core, designed to exploit linebackers stepping up on run action, and the primary read progression starts with the Y pop route in the shallow to intermediate middle before working outside to any vertical shots if the middle is capped.
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating down into the box, since a single high shell tells you the defense is loading up against the run and the play action window will be wider. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If they step up hard on the play fake, the Y pop route will come open almost immediately in the vacated middle zone. Beware of a Cover 3 sky or buzz call where a safety rotates down to rob the pop route, since this is the primary defensive answer that shuts down the play. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the Y is a tough matchup for the offense, so key on whether the defense shows man alignment (tight press or trail technique) before committing to this play. Watch for a delayed A gap or interior blitz that could beat the protection quickly, especially against nano blitz packages designed to disrupt shotgun play action before the fake fully develops.
Run this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when you have already established the run game with HB Power or Inside Zone Split from the same set, since the play action sells much better once the defense respects the ground attack.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap. If the Mike and Will are sitting at 4 to 5 yards off the line in a run-support shell, this is your green light to call it because the pop route will have a wide throwing lane.
Against man coverage, hot route the Y to a quicker option or check down to the backfield release since man defenders will often carry the tight end through the pop route zone.
Use this play in sequence with RPO Alert Z Bang and HB Power to keep the defense guessing between run and play action, forcing linebackers to freeze on their run fits.
If you see a two high shell pre-snap, expect the pop route to sit underneath softer zone coverage, so trust the middle read early instead of forcing it outside.
