RPO Alert Z Bang is a true run-pass option out of Shotgun Wide Slot Left that pairs an inside zone run scheme with a quick alert throw to the Z receiver on a bang route (hard breaking route out of the slot). The quarterback reads the play-side linebacker or force defender at the snap: if that defender steps up to fill the box, the QB pulls and fires the alert throw to the Z, and if he stays wide or drops to cover the flat, the QB hands off and lets the zone run develop behind the line. This is a defense-neutral concept, it beats both light boxes with the run and overaggressive run blitzes with the quick pass, making it a core stress play against both man and zone shells.
Watch the play-side linebacker depth and shoulders presnap, if he is crashed downhill toward the line of scrimmage he is signaling run support, which is exactly what triggers the alert throw read for the QB. Check safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety usually means the underneath flat or curl defender responsible for the Z bang has help over the top, so sitting on the route can shut down the quick throw. Identify if the defense is running a zone blitz or run blitz call, since defenders selling run fits but dropping into the passing lane post-snap can bait the QB into the alert throw and jump the route for a turnover. Man coverage on the Z receiver with no underneath zone defender nearby is the biggest vulnerability for this play, so look for user-controlled defenders staying home in man technique rather than flowing to the run fit. Overpursuing linebackers who flow hard to the run action leave the bang route wide open in the throwing lane, so disciplined backers who stay square and read the mesh point are the best counter to this concept.
Presnap, count the box defenders and check if the play-side backer is stacked over the tackle-tight end gap, since that number tells you whether the run or the alert throw is live before the ball is even snapped.
Use the alert throw as a built-in answer to run blitzes and edge pressure, since defenders crashing downhill open up the bang route in the flat or hitch window almost instantly.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you consistently see cornerbacks sitting on the Z bang read, this gives you a second answer against defenses that key the alert side.
Pair this play with HB Dive or Inside Zone Split earlier in a series to set up run tendencies, then come back to RPO Alert Z Bang so the defense has to respect both the give and the quick game equally.
Best used on early downs (first and second and short to medium) where defenses are more willing to load the box, and also works well on third and short since the quick game element beats blitz packages that try to force a stop.
