Z Sluggo is a man beater out of Shotgun Wide Slot Left that isolates the Z receiver on a slant and go double move designed to freeze off man corners before breaking vertically down the sideline. The Z runs the sluggo as the primary read, while underneath crossers and a flat route occupy linebackers and hold safety help, opening a window against press man or aggressive Cover 1 and Cover 3 defenders who bite on the initial slant fake. Protection is a standard shotgun five man slide, so the primary progression starts with the Z sluggo, then works to the crosser and check down if the double move is jumped.
Pre-snap, check the corner over the Z receiver, tight press alignment with no safety rotation over the top signals man coverage and a green light for the sluggo. Post-snap, watch the single high safety, if he stays flat footed or bites on the slant fake, the sluggo will win over the top for an explosive gain. Identify Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, since this concept struggles when there is consistent deep help on both sides. Key the underneath linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the crosser, if he sinks into a deep zone drop instead of matching the route, expect a lurk defender to jump the throwing lane. Watch for a disguised blitz off the slot or edge, since a five man slide protection can be exposed by a six man pressure package, forcing a quick check down read instead of the deep shot.
Call this play when you diagnose man coverage pre-snap, especially Cover 1 or Cover 3 Man with a single high safety who has to respect the deep middle.
Motion the Z or shift the formation to confirm man coverage by watching if a defender follows across the formation before the snap.
Hot route the underneath crosser into a shallow drag if you see a linebacker sitting in a shallow zone to give yourself a quick outlet against zone shells.
Pair this play with PA All Curl or PA Post Curls from the same set so the defense has to respect both the deep sluggo shot and the intermediate curl reads, keeping safeties honest.
Best used on second and long or first down after establishing the run, since the double move needs a defender playing tight or downhill to fully sell the fake.
