Lead Zone WK is an inside zone run out of Shotgun Wide Slot Left that puts a lead blocker in front of the ball carrier to seal the first wall of defenders at the point of attack. The offensive line steps in unison to the play side, working double teams at the point of attack before climbing to the second level against linebackers, while the lead blocker isolates on a linebacker or filling safety to spring the cutback lane. The primary read progression starts with the play side double team, then works to the lead blocker's kick or seal block, giving the running back a inside, bend, or bounce decision based on how the front flows.
Pre-snap, count the box and note whether a safety has crept down into run support since that extra body can outnumber the lead blocker and kill the cutback. Watch linebacker depth and lean, if both backers are shaded hard to the play side call, the defense is likely stacking the strength and daring you to cut back away from the flow. Post-snap, identify whether the defense is playing gap sound or flowing hard, aggressive flow defenses are more vulnerable to the cutback lane the lead blocker sets up. User controlled defenders sitting in the hole or spying the lead blocker's path can blow up this concept, so scan for a user linebacker crashing downhill before committing to the called gap. Against a nano blitz or edge pressure package, the backside cutback lane often opens wider since those blitzers over commit off the snap and vacate the backside gap.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the lead blocker only accounts for one extra defender at the second level.
Use motion or a quick glance at safety depth to confirm this is a zone or man shell without an extra run fitter cheating into the box.
If the defense shows a stacked front with both linebackers hugging the line of scrimmage, check to a perimeter concept like Wide Slot Left or a play-action shot instead of forcing this run into a loaded front.
Pair this play with HB Dive and Read Option earlier in a series so the defense has to respect inside zone tempo, then hit Lead Zone WK when linebackers start flowing hard and leave a cutback lane.
On early downs in normal personnel looks this play punishes teams that key run fits off the quarterback instead of the lead blocker, so vary your run frequency to keep defenders honest.
