HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Wide Slot Left is a designed screen pass that gets your running back leaking out to the flat behind a wall of offensive linemen releasing downfield. This is a blitz beater and man beater at its core, punishing aggressive pass rush calls and man coverage where linebackers and defensive linemen crash upfield instead of respecting the screen. The primary read progression is simple: identify the blitz or man look pre-snap, let the play develop for a beat, then get the ball out to the HB as soon as the blockers set the wall so he can work downhill behind them.
Look for blitz packages pre-snap including nano blitzes or overload fronts, since this screen is designed to counter exactly that aggression. Man coverage shells with corners playing tight technique and no safety help underneath are prime targets because there is no user defender sitting in the passing lane to jump the screen. Watch out for zone coverage with linebackers sitting in shallow drops or a defender assigned to spy the backfield, since a lurking linebacker or nickel defender can read the screen and blow it up for a loss. If the user controls a defensive lineman and drops him into coverage or has him crash down on the screen instead of rushing, that is a sign the defense is scouting this exact call. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the box often means the defense is loading up to stop underneath throws and screens.
Call this play when you see pre-snap indicators of pressure such as linebackers creeping to the line or a safety rotating down into the box, since aggressive fronts sell out on the screen. Third and short to medium distance is ideal because the defense is more likely to bring extra rushers or play tight man coverage. Hold the throw button for a hair longer than feels natural so your linemen have time to release and set the wall, throwing too early results in the HB getting hit before blockers arrive. Pair this with PA Deep Choice or PA Post Curls in the same set to condition the defense into biting on run action or hard rushes, then dial up the screen once they start selling out. Use this as a change of pace call after running HB Dive or HB Power a few times so linebackers key run fits and vacate the underneath area for the screen to hit.
