Inside Zone Split is a zone run play out of the Shotgun Wide Slot Left formation that hands the ball off to the HB on a split zone concept, meaning the offensive line flows in one direction while a split defender (fullback or wing player) crosses the formation to seal backside pursuit. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so it is not a man or zone beater in the coverage sense, but it exploits gap discipline and overaggressive backside linebacker flow. The primary read progression for the ball carrier starts backside, reading the double team or combo block at the point of attack, then bouncing outside if the backside cutback lane opens or pressing frontside if the double team seals the first level defender.
Check the Mike linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow in the box at five yards or less he can fill the cutback lane before the split blocker gets there. Identify whether the defense is running a 4-3 under or over front, since the split flow read against a shaded nose tackle changes which gap stays open longest. Watch for a blitzing linebacker off the edge on the split zone side, if the user jumps that gap early you need to cut the backside immediately rather than press the mesh point. Post-snap, key the safety rotation, if both safeties stay deep in a two high shell the box stays light and the frontside cutback should hit fast. Beware defenses that key the fullback or wing motion and send a linebacker to shoot the gap he vacates, this nano blitz look kills the play before the back can decide.
Run this play against base fronts and light boxes where the defense shows six or fewer defenders in the box pre-snap.
Use the right stick to manually take over your lead blocker or fullback on the split zone action to seal an unblocked edge defender before the handoff even hits.

Avoid calling this on short yardage third downs against stacked boxes, since the cutback lanes disappear when the defense loads eight in the box.
