RNS Hitches is a quick-strike pass concept out of Shotgun Trips Slots Close (10 personnel) designed to attack zone defenses with instant separation routes. The backside X runs a vertical release up the boundary, while the trips side shows two receivers sitting down on hitch routes at the sticks and the innermost slot climbing to a seam/vertical. There is no visible blocking action shown for backfield help, so this is a pure five-out or four-out quick passing concept meant to get the ball out before pressure arrives. Primary progression starts with the outside trips hitch, works to the inside hitch, and comes back to the backside X streak as a big-play checkdown if a defender bites on the shorter routes.
Defensive Reads
Watch for cornerbacks playing tight press man on the trips receivers, since hitches struggle against physical man coverage that disrupts the route at the top of the stem. Zone defenses like Cover 3 or Cover 2 that drop corners into short outside zones will bait the hitch throw, so look for a user lurk defender sitting on the numbers ready to jump the route. Check linebacker depth before the snap, since shallow linebackers can undercut the inside hitch and turn it into a pick six if the quarterback throws on rhythm without checking the flow. Single high safety shells leave the backside X streak vulnerable, so if you see one deep defender, respect the vertical shot instead of forcing the quick game. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage behind them can be dangerous for this play since the quick game helps beat pressure, but a well-timed nano blitz on the play side can disrupt the pocket before hitches sit down.
Usage Tips
Fire this on third and short to medium since the hitches sit right at first down markers and give you an easy conversion window.
Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the outside trips receiver is playing off man or sitting in a zone shell, since hitches punish soft coverage and off corners who bail at the snap.
Use the backside X streak as a home run shot against single high safety looks where the corner is forced to respect the hitch and gets beat over the top.
Pair this with RNS Georgia or RNS Georgia Mesh in the same set so you can show the same trips look and keep linebackers guessing between quick hitches and mesh crossers.
Hot route the inside slot receiver into a deeper dig if you see linebackers sitting shallow, since that window opens up against teams that overplay the hitch depth.
