Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Trips Slots Close is a pure zone run play with the HB aligned offset in the backfield and a five man offensive line zone blocking scheme. The diagram shows the trips slot receivers and the isolated X to the boundary simply releasing upfield as decoys with no route combo to sell run action, while the interior line flows laterally to seal gaps and create a natural cutback lane. The primary read is the frontside double team at the point of attack, with the HB reading the playside A gap first before bouncing to the B or C gap based on how the defensive line and linebackers flow.

Defensive Reads

Key the playside linebacker depth and shade pre-snap, if he is stacked tight over the A gap the cutback lane to the backside will be the better path. Watch for a Mike or Will linebacker scraping fast over the top which signals a run blitz or fire zone look designed to fill gaps before the double team can seal. This run struggles against odd fronts with a true nose shade and heavy interior fronts like 46 or Bear, since those alignments clog both A gaps and remove the natural cutback. It beats light boxes and defenses that spread out to cover the trips look, especially nickel or dime packages that sacrifice front seven numbers for coverage. Post-snap, track the safety rotation, if a safety triggers downhill immediately off run flow it usually means the defense read run pre-snap and you should expect an extra hat in the box on the next call.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since trips formations invite defenses to walk down an extra defender to the strength.

Use the HB press and cut mechanic to manipulate the playside linebacker, letting the double team develop before committing to a gap.

This play pairs well with HB Sweep and HB Mid Draw in the same set since all three sell similar zone flow but hit different areas, keeping second level defenders honest.

Call this on early downs (first and ten or second and medium) to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play action shots like PA Read later in the series.

Against aggressive gap shooting fronts, hot route the backside receiver on a quick slant or use no motion to keep an extra blocker in to protect the cutback lane.
