Double Out is a trips-based man beater out of Shotgun Trips Slots Close that isolates the backside X on a solo out route while the trips side stacks two out breaking routes underneath a vertical clear-out. The outside trips receiver runs a deep seam to occupy the deep safety, the middle slot works a quick out, and the inside slot mirrors that out from a shallow drag angle, creating natural spacing against man coverage. Primary read starts backside with the isolated X out route against man leverage, then progresses to the double outs on the trips side if the backside is taken away by a hard corner or bracket.
Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the easiest matchup, the isolated backside out will consistently separate against press or trail technique. Watch for a linebacker sitting at the sticks in zone drops, he can jump both out routes on the trips side if he reads the quarterback's eyes early. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender is the biggest threat since he can undercut the shallow out route before it develops. If the deep safety bails hard to the seam route, that confirms man coverage and you should immediately work the backside out route as your first read. Watch for a nano blitz off the edge on the backside, since the isolated X route means one less blocker help if the offensive line is protecting slide away from that side.
Check the backside corner alignment before the snap, if he is playing outside leverage the isolated out route to the lone X will win immediately on the break. Use the vertical seam route from the trips side as a clear-out tool to pull the deep safety away from the double out combo underneath. This play shines on 3rd and short to medium since both out routes settle at the sticks and give you a built in conversion window. Hot route the shallow inside out to a flat route if you are facing a Cover 2 shell to create better spacing underneath the deep half defenders. Pair this with RNS Georgia Mesh or Choice Special from the same set to keep defenses guessing between horizontal stretch concepts and rub route packages.
