Breakdown
Jet HB Zone is an inside zone run out of Shotgun Trio with jet motion across the backfield before the snap. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level while the running back reads the flow of the defensive line. This is a run play, not a pass concept, and the primary read progression is the running back reading the play side gap first, then bouncing outside or cutting backside based on how the defensive front flows to the jet motion.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and flow at the snap, if they overcommit to the jet motion side, the running back should cut backside against the grain. Check for a defender spying or following the jet motion man pre-snap, this tells you whether the defense is in man coverage and more susceptible to misdirection. Look for stacked fronts or extra defenders in the box, which signal a run blitz designed to stop inside zone before it develops. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange linebacker technique, since this can cancel the cutback lane and force the back to commit to the play side too early. Beware of gap-sound defenses with disciplined edge players, since they take away the bounce outside and force the zone run into a phone booth.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
Call this play on early downs in normal down and distance situations, especially first and second down, to keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy Trio set calls.
Pair this with Jet Touch Pass and Jet PA HB Wheel from the same set so the defense has to respect the jet sweep, the touch pass, and the inside zone run all off the same pre-snap motion look.
If the defense shows heavy box counts or crashes hard toward the jet motion, hot route the running back only if needed, but trust the zone blocking to cut backside against overpursuit.
