Defensive Reads
Pre snap, identify if the defense has a slot corner or safety shaded outside over the bubble receiver, since that alignment signals they are prepared to jump the screen. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the play side linebacker crashes hard to fill the run lane, the quarterback should pull and throw the bubble before he can redirect. Man coverage on the backside receiver with no underneath help is the signal to trust the whip route, since the receiver's break back inside creates natural separation against man defenders playing outside leverage. Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 that keep the slot defender square and patient will take away the bubble read, forcing the quarterback to trust the run fit or the whip breaker instead. Watch for a nano blitz off the edge or a linebacker sent on a delayed run blitz, since aggressive backside pressure is the fastest way to disrupt the quarterback before the RPO read develops.
Usage Tips
Check the numbers in the box before the snap, if you count six or fewer defenders in the box this is a green light to let the RPO logic hand the ball off automatically.
Watch the slot defender over the bubble receiver, if he crashes down on run action or blitzes off the edge, snap throw the bubble immediately for a free access completion.
Use the backside whip route as your answer versus teams that key hard on the bubble receiver at the snap, since it turns a quick out into an inside breaking window against overpursuing corners.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and Wide Zone Read from the same set so the defense cannot sit on run fits without opening up the bubble and whip throws.
Best called on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenses are more likely to load the box, since that forces the automatic give read and creates explosive play potential if a linebacker blitzes.
