Read Option is a zone read run play out of Shotgun Tight Slots HB Wk with 11 personnel, featuring the HB aligned tight to the QB for the mesh point. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sliding to the play side while the QB reads the backside end man on the line to decide whether to hand off or pull and keep. This is a run play designed to attack the edge and create a numbers advantage against overaggressive fronts, with the primary read being the backside defensive end: if he crashes down on the HB, the QB pulls and attacks the vacated edge, and if he stays wide, the QB hands off for the interior lane.
As the defense, key the mesh point and stay disciplined with your defensive end instead of crashing hard, since Read Option punishes aggressive edge defenders every time. Watch for the QB eyes on the snap since most user QBs telegraph the pull by looking directly at the backside end before deciding. Spam the DE contain button or user the edge defender to force a predetermined false key that the CPU AI cannot exploit. This play struggles against a hard edge squeeze combined with a linebacker spy, so bring an extra defender to the boundary if you suspect the keep. Look for run blitzes with linebackers filling the A and B gaps quickly, since Read Option loses its explosiveness once the interior gets clogged before the mesh point resolves.
Check the defensive end alignment before the snap since a wide 9-technique or crashing DE tells you which way the play is designed to break.
Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep defenses honest against your dropback passing game from the same Tight Slots HB Wk set.
Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the run key without giving up an easy throw.
If you see a nano blitz coming off the edge, pull the ball immediately since the blitzer usually overruns the mesh point.
Sequence this with Inside Zone and HB Mid Draw to condition the defense to crash inside, then hit the keep read for a big gain once linebackers start flowing hard.
