The diagram shows the two outside receivers running flat routes toward the sideline while the two inside slot receivers cross with a switch release, one sitting down on a stick route while the other works up and away. This is a quick game man beater built to attack pattern-matching linebackers and off man corners, with the primary read starting on the stick route running the option route against the underneath defender, then working outside to the flat if the switch concept creates leverage against man coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify press man on the outside receivers, that alignment tells you the stick route option should break inside away from the defender for an easy completion. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard to the stick landmark that signals zone match coverage and you should reroute to the flat or switch route immediately. Key the safety rotation before the snap, two high safeties staying split usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4, which lets the flat routes work versus the corner without immediate help. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the stick route can jump this concept, so double check the middle of the field for a spy or rat linebacker before locking onto the primary read. Man coverage with no help over the top, especially Cover 0 or Cover 1, gets exposed hard by the switch release creating natural traffic and separation for both inside receivers.
Usage Tips
Fire this off on early downs and third and short since the stick route settles quickly and gives you a rhythm throw before the pocket collapses.
Check the depth of the slot corners pre-snap, if they are lined up tight and aggressive the switch release will create natural rub leverage and spring the stick man open.
Use motion or a hot route on the backside flat defender if you see a linebacker sitting directly on the stick route landmark, that tells you Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone match and you should peek the switch route working vertically instead.
Pair this call with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek out of the same formation so the defense cannot key on personnel or alignment tendencies.
Against Cover 2 shells throw the flat route quickly to the flow of the switch since the corner sitting on top will not have help underneath.
