Defensive Reads
Man coverage on the slot receiver running the wheel is the biggest tell, if the defender bails outside with the wheel route you have a coverage bust and a big play window. Watch the flow of the linebackers on the drag route, a linebacker who widens too fast to the drag opens up the middle of the field for the post. Against zone shells, key the deep safety rotation, a single high safety cheating toward the post side leaves the wheel one on one against a corner without deep help. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge will shorten the quarterback's window, so the drag or TE crosser become the necessary quick outlet against pressure. Lurking defenders sitting in the shallow middle zone can jump the drag route, so user awareness there can bait the quarterback into a turnover if he does not fully clear his first read.
Usage Tips
Read the safety shell before the snap to decide between the post and wheel, single high favors the post while two high with a deep half rotation opens the wheel down the sideline.
Progress your eyes from the post to the wheel first since both attack vertical zones, then check down to the drag or TE crosser if the underneath defenders sink too deep.
Hot route the TE crosser into a spot or option route against zone heavy shells to give yourself a reliable sit read against Tampa 2 or Cover 3 dropback linebackers.
Use this play on second and medium to long situations where defenses are more likely to play off coverage, since the wheel and post both need a cushion to fully develop.
