X Out is a five man protection route out of Shotgun Tight Slots HB Wk that isolates the X receiver on an outside break while the two slot receivers occupy the middle of the field. The diagram shows the outside receiver to the top running a two level vertical stem that breaks hard outside to the sideline (the flag route to the corner), with the inner slot receiver running a deep vertical seam straight up the numbers. On the boundary side the X receiver runs a quick out breaking hard toward the sideline for a quick throw, while the HB releases out of the backfield on a swing/flare route to the flat as a checkdown or man beater against blitz. This is a man beater concept, and the primary read progression starts with the X out route for a quick, high percentage throw before working to the flag and seam combo on the far side if the out is covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check corner depth on the X receiver side, since a tight press corner signals man coverage and makes the out route riskier without a hot route adjustment. Watch the single high safety alignment, because if he shades toward the flag and seam side of the field you should immediately look to the X out for the easy completion. Post-snap, key the flat defender or nickel corner on the boundary, since a hard sink into the out route lane means you should look to the HB flare or check it down quickly. Zone coverage with two deep safeties can squeeze the seam route, so if you see a two high shell before the snap, prioritize the flag route breaking to the corner. Watch for a nano blitz off the edge, since the five man protection can get overloaded and the quarterback needs to get the ball out fast to the X out or HB flare read.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to see if the defense shifts to man or zone before the snap, since the X out route wins hardest against man coverage with an off corner. If you see a single high safety shell, prioritize the flag route on the far side because the seam route occupies the safety and clears space for the corner break. Hot route the HB flare to a wide flat route if you expect a blitz, giving yourself an outlet valve against pressure looks. This play pairs well on early downs when you have called RPO Peek Slant or Mesh Spot earlier in the drive, since defenders start cheating toward quick inside throws and the outside out route becomes even more open. Best used on second or third and short to medium since the X out route develops fast and does not require a long developing play fake.
