Four Verticals out of Shotgun Tight Slots HB Wk sends all four eligible receivers vertically up the field, with both outside receivers running go routes up the numbers, the inner right slot receiver pushing a vertical seam, and the tight end (in red) running a shorter vertical stem to occupy the middle linebacker or safety. The HB stays in to check block off the diagram, giving five in protection against the pass rush. This is a classic zone beater designed to stretch Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells horizontally and vertically, with the primary read progression starting outside to the boundary go route, working to the seam route, then checking down to the tight end's vertical if the safety rotates late.
Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and opens the seam windows. Pre-snap, a single deep safety indicates Cover 3 or Cover 1, which means the outside go routes have more room to win over the top. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled safety sinking into a deep middle lurk, which can rob the inside seam route and force you to the boundary go route instead. Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers getting fast vertical drops can disrupt the tight end's route and clog the middle read. This play is vulnerable to disguised blitzes since it relies on five-man protection, so recognize pre-snap overload looks on either edge and be ready to get the ball out on the first read.
Identify the safety alignment pre-snap to determine if you are facing a two-high or one-high shell before the snap.
Against Cover 2, target the seam routes in the honey hole between the cornerback's flat drop and the safety's deep half.
Against Cover 3, work the sideline go routes since the single deep safety cannot cover the full width of the field.
Use hot routes to convert the tight end's vertical into a shallow drag or option route if you diagnose man coverage with no safety help.
Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or Mtn Mesh Traffic earlier in a series so the defense respects the run and short game before you dial up Four Verts on a favorable down and distance like second or third and long.
