Breakdown

Mtn Smash lines up in Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex Wk with 11 personnel, and the diagram shows a pre-snap motion from the left slot receiver crossing the formation to stack near the numbers, creating a bunch-like look before the snap. On the boundary side, the outside receiver runs a deep corner/go route up the sideline while the motion man settles into a shallow drag underneath, and on the field side you get the classic Smash concept with the outside receiver running a deep corner route and the inside slot receiver sitting down on a hitch/flat route. This is a Cover 2 beater by design: the corner route stretches the flat defender vertically while the underneath hitch sits in the space the cornerback vacates, and the primary read is field side high-low (corner to flat) unless the boundary drag is wide open off the motion against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, key the corner alignment on the field side, if he is playing off with outside leverage he is inviting the hitch route so be ready to squat and jump it as the user defender. Watch the safety depth on the snap, in Cover 2 both safeties should split the field evenly, but if one safety cheats toward the boundary side drag it signals a rotation you can exploit with the corner route. Track the flat defender or curl-flat player on the field side, this play is designed to put him in a bind between the flat and the corner route, so sitting him in the middle of that conflict is the ideal defensive answer. Man coverage defenders who chase the pre-snap motion across the formation are vulnerable to a rub or natural pick if the routes cross near the line, so communicate a switch call to avoid that leverage loss. This play struggles against a hard Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 quarters shell with disciplined deep defenders, since the deep corner route has no room to work and the underneath routes get sat on by extra defenders in the flat.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the ball is snapped, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you know it is man coverage and the drag route becomes a live answer versus a blitz.

Against true Cover 2 shells, work the field side smash combo first: read the flat defender, if he sinks with the corner route throw the hitch underneath immediately for a easy completion.

This play shines on second and medium to second and long where defenses often sit in Cover 2 or Cover 4 to prevent big plays, so call it after establishing an inside zone run to keep linebackers honest.

Pair Mtn Smash with Mtn Corner or Four Verticals in your play-calling sequence, since both threaten the same corner route landmark but attack different leverage points, keeping defenders guessing on route combos.

If the user drops a defender into a shallow lurk to jump the drag route, look immediately to the field side corner route since the lurking defender has abandoned deep coverage responsibilities.
