Mtn Drive is a Cover 4 beater built off the classic Drive concept, run from Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex Wk with 11 personnel. Pre-snap motion brings the inside receiver across, and at the snap the two inside receivers stack a shallow drive combo: one runs a quick drag underneath while the other climbs vertically up the seam before snapping into a deep dig at 12-15 yards, creating a natural pick against man coverage and a stretch against zone. The two outside receivers on the right side release vertically as clear-outs to occupy the deep defenders, and the primary progression starts with the shallow crosser for a quick underneath completion before working up to the dig if the linebackers widen or the middle of the field opens.
Pre-snap, identify safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are deep and outside the numbers this is a strong indicator of Cover 4 which this concept is designed to exploit. Watch the linebacker who has to cover the shallow drag, if he sits too deep the drag is open immediately for an easy underneath gain. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he widens to help on the drag the dig route behind him becomes the primary window. This play struggles against aggressive man blitzes where a user-controlled defender can jump the shallow crosser at the snap, so be ready to check into a quicker outlet if you see man alignment combined with blitz indicators like linebackers creeping toward the line. Cover 2 shells with a deep half safety sitting on the dig route can shut this down, so if you see two deep safeties split evenly rather than rotated to Cover 4, expect the dig window to be tighter and consider working the drag or checking to a different concept.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a clean man coverage read.
Against zone shells, especially Cover 4 or Cover 2, work the shallow drag first to bait the underneath linebackers, then hit the dig behind them once they flow toward the flat.
This play works best on second and medium to third and medium where the defense is likely to sit in zone rather than bring pressure.
Pair this with Mtn PA Cross Choice or Mtn Cross Choice earlier in a drive so the defense respects the same motion and formation but has to account for a play-action look, opening up the drive concept later.
If the user drops a linebacker to jump the shallow drag, immediately progress to the dig route since that vacates the middle of the field.
Hot route the outside clear-out receivers into deeper routes on obvious passing downs to fully occupy safeties and open more room for the dig.
