Breakdown

Mtn Corner out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex Wk features pre-snap motion from the backside slot receiver crossing to the strongside, with the offense showing two vertical routes on the right (a corner route from the outside receiver and a wheel-style vertical from the inside receiver) while the left side runs a deep comeback, an out route from the motion man, and a shallow drag from the tight end/slot underneath. The running back stays in to check release or leak out to the flat, giving the quarterback a layered read from deep outside to shallow inside. This is primarily a man beater, using the motion and route spacing to create leverage and natural picks against man coverage, though the deep comeback and corner combo also stress the deep quarters of zone shells. Primary progression starts with the corner route on the boundary, works to the deep comeback on the backside, then checks down to the drag and flat as underneath outlets.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the corner route side, a single high safety cheating toward that side signals possible double coverage on the corner and should push the quarterback to the backside comeback. Watch the motion defender closely, if he trails the receiver in motion across the formation it is man coverage and the corner route wins, if he stays put or shows a zone drop it is likely a zone shell. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the deep half or quarter to jump the corner route, this lurk threat is the biggest risk to the primary read and should trigger a check to the underneath drag or comeback. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the shallow drag and flat combo, so the quarterback needs to be ready to climb the ladder to the intermediate comeback instead of forcing the checkdown. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are ideal for this play since the corner and wheel combo isolates defenders vertically before extra rushers can affect the pocket, but disguised zone blitzes with a linebacker dropping into the vacated underneath area can jump the drag route.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation it confirms man coverage and opens up the corner and comeback routes for big plays.

Against man coverage, prioritize the corner route on the boundary first since it attacks off man leverage and creates a natural pick with the vertical wheel route underneath it.

Against zone shells, work the deep comeback route on the backside since it sits down in the void behind underneath zone defenders and in front of deep safeties.

This play pairs well with Mtn Drive or Mtn Cross Choice in the same set since the initial motion and formation look identical, forcing defenders to guess between shallow crossers and the deeper corner shot.

Best called on second or third and medium to long, where the deeper corner and comeback routes have room to develop and the defense is more likely to be in a passing coverage rather than stacked in the box.
